Mysore

“Mysore practice” or “Mysore style Ashtanga” took its name from the city in the south of India where this practice was founded by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

It is an individualized practice in a group setting. You can join at any time, no matter your level. Beginners are more than welcome to join as this is the most effective and safe way of learning Ashtanga. No prior knowledge/experience is required.

You practice at your own pace, guided by your own breath. The teacher is there to teach you the sequence, offer hands on adjustments and help adapt the practice to your particular needs. Even though there are many students in the room, you are completely independent in your practice. Still, the collective energy of the Mysore room adds another dimension to your practice and you feel empowered by your fellow practitioners.

In a Mysore setting you progress and learn the sequence fast, gradually adding poses under the guidance of your teacher. This style is ideal if you are looking to build your own practice that you can take anywhere.

Traditionally, Mysore practice is done 6 times a week but you can start with 2-3 times per week if you are a beginner and gradually add practices. Your first sessions as a beginner will be 30-45 minutes. Mysore practice should ideally be combined with one Led class per week.

  • Tania Kemou

Tania had her first encounter with Ashtanga yoga in 2004 in Athens, her hometown. Several years later, and while she was living in Paris she started a daily practice under the guidance of Patrick Frapeau. The physical wellness, as well as the deep peace and healing she experienced made her commit toAshtanga over other styles. Several years into the practice, her path led her to Mysore, India, where she studied with Saraswathi and Sharath Jois, the mother and grandson of the late founder of Ashtanga yoga Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. After her first trip to India, she decides to quit her job as a corporate lawyer and dedicate her life to teaching yoga. Ever since then she has been returning to Mysore every year to study and honor the roots of yoga.

In February 2022 her teacher Sharath Jois granted her authorization Level 1 and his blessing to teach. In her teachings, Tania focuses on the quality of the breath, as a unique path to harnessing the potential of the body and gradually getting to calm the mind. Her teaching is tightly knit to the tradition but not dogmatic.

Her wish is to accompany the students on their journey towards a deeper awareness, to acknowledge and celebrate their uniqueness and show them that with practice, transformation is possible.
